ไมค์เกิดมาเป็นเด็กที่ตัวเล็กและสมาธิสั้นหรือattention-deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) เขามักถูกรังแกโดยเด็กๆเพื่อนบ้านที่โตกว่า เขาเริ่มฝึกยกน้ำหนักเมื่ออายุ 13 ปีในยิมเล็กๆที่พ่อของเขาทำให้ในห้องใต้ดิน

       ในปีแรกที่เริ่มประกวดเขาชนะรายการ the Teen Mr. Massachusetts และได้อันดับที่ 10 the Teenage Mr. America


ได้ใบรับรองเป็นนักเพาะกายอาชีพ : จากการประกวดในรายการ NPC USA Championships, HeavyWeight & Overall ( ขณะที่อายุ 26 ปี )
